Chapter Ten

“Did you really think you were just going to break into a school’s private property and not get caught?” Adam growled, staring down at me with that serious cop frown.

I sat in the back of the ambulance with a thick blanket around my shoulders. Overkill, but it was protocol that Sophia and I get checked out, especially after I crawled through the top of the greenhouse and ended up with a few splinters from the rickety table.

“Well, maybe whoever installed the greenhouse shouldn’t have put a lock just on the outside. Don’t you find that odd that they were trying to keep people out of it?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

Of course, Adam could see right through me and wasn’t about to let me in on the investigation.

Yet.

“So, you’re going to admit to breaking and entering now too? Do you want me to call your lawyer?” he asked, giving me that stupid smirk that I would normally kiss off his face, but I was too mad.

“Amber, you know, the family lawyer, Haley’s girlfriend, is probably busy,” I said, mirroring his smirk.

This time he frowned.

He knew I wouldn’t hesitate to call Amber, Tiffany’s stepdaughter’s girlfriend, if needed.

Though I also knew how big her sigh would be if she heard I was in trouble again.

I met Amber almost a year ago when I had an inkling she was somehow involved in Tiffany’s late husband’s death. I hadn’t thought that involvement was because she was secretly dating Tiffany’s stepdaughter.

Now I’d asked Amber for help on a few occasions, and at this point she may have started to block my calls.

Clearing my throat, I leaned forward. “So, who called about someone being in the greenhouse anyway? Someone else hanging around and looking for clues as well? Are you going to partner up with them?”

He ran a hand over his face with a deep sigh. “It was actually the school groundskeeper. He said he was out walking the dog and saw lights coming from the greenhouse. I guess he didn’t think to call out and see if there was a crazy brunette and her best friend trying to do their own investigation.”

I tilted my head. “Why was he out here walking the dog?”

Adam opened his mouth to speak, but I sprang up first, dropping the thick blanket on the ground. “He doesn’t even live around here, so why would he be walking at the school? Do you think he was around here snooping? Maybe looking for clues? Or maybe going back to the scene of the crime?”

Adam stepped back, holding his arms out and wiggling his fingers. “Leslie, you’re jumping to conclusions, and this isn’t part of the investigation.” He then dropped his hands and tilted his head. “And how do you know where he lives?”

I let out a nervous laugh, pushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “It’s a small town; everyone knows where everyone lives.”

He sighed, shaking his head. “You know, if you really want to be a detective, you have to stop with all these tells.
